My rainy day sketches and paintings sparkle with light, and we have finally summer weather

Sketches sparkle with light probably because the weather has been no fun. The Latvian weather has been very unpredictable. Since I am always drawing and painting mostly from life and using real objects, that was quite upsetting. I did not get all depressed, but moved on as much as I could.

For time saving purposes, I am sometimes outlining and drawing with black pen. I do not have to use glasses that way which is great because glasses can destroy proportions and distort the visual perception.

I love cheerful colors!

We were doing parrots in the Exotic birds drawing workshop. Everybody loved them!

Apples were growing in the sister’s garden, so were the red currants.

I was very happy also that I finally obtained the St. Petersburg watercolor set. I wanted these paints ever since I was a small kid when I saw one artist painting with them. I got them now at the age of 55, actually my birthday is just some weeks away, so it’s a nice birthday gift for myself. These paints are said to be the best in the world just because they are made of the purest and best really natural ingredients. I love these watercolor paints: they have excellent transparency,  brightness and they are very pure.

The sun is beating down today, so we are having some Mexico weather this week. Isn’t that crazy how I was freezing in my leather coat just a week ago, and it is advisable to wear nothing more than a swimming suit at the moment? Too bad, no swimming pool anywhere here, but I suppose, I can survive that, too!

Sketching in watercolor what is the advantage

I am a child of the sun, my horoscope sign is leo, and this immediately changes my inner settings. I don’t care how hot it gets, whenever it is sunny, I am happy.

I would love to express the hugest THANK YOU to all those fellow bloggers, friends and students who did not stop encouraging me during the bad weather period and are still following my trip to Europe, Latvia.

  1. Lovely work! In spite of constraints artwork must go on. (I hope you will let us know what you think of those st. Petersburg’s, compared to other brands of watercolor….I haven’t bought any yet)

    1. Thanks Cynthia! Exactly, nothing can stop art from being created! I knew these paints were much appreciated by many local artists and always hoped to get some. I bought the moderately priced set, there were more expensive, too. I will ask my daughter to always send me replacement colors when I am out of these! I did not feel extreme difference, however, they are very strong and saturated. They do not create much mud and flow fantastically.

    1. Thanks so much, I really appreciate you stopped by! I was in a good mood just because the weather showed its sunny side. I love drawing, have been doing this since early childhood, so that comes to me effortlessly. I admire simple objects in the garden, whenever I get a chance, I would sketch or draw some. I’m using so called blind drawing when one looks mostly at the object and less at the paper. I suppose, everybody who’s been doing this for long time develops this technique.

    1. Thank you Mary! So are your pastels, I will leave some comment when I visit next time. The Internet has been torturing me so much at this location, I mean, the connection, that I was really upset I could do very little since the largest pages or sites would not even load.

    1. This was my first attempt ever to draw a parrot! I had intended to draw other birds for the workshop, but things went their own way this time. I’m glad you found your favorite bird attractive in these sketches.

    1. Thank you so much! I couldn’t take very good pics, but I’m glad about all these kind comments! I can see how huge is the difference when I use the proper camera, oh well, that will have to wait until I’m at home!
Can you imagine, it’s late night here? The time zone difference is 7 hours, jet lag was bothering me for quite a while.

  2. Being a very amateur and beginner … I appreciate the sketches and painting you did. it is not easy to do… it’s going to take me a very long time to come close to what you do… if ever Diane

    1. Thanks Diane! I’ve been drawing all my life, I simply had this gift already as a small child. However, we are learning as long as we live, I’m no exception. The truth is everything takes some practice and some effort. Who cares how much time you spend on painting? The main thing is that you like working in that direction. The more we do, the better we become.

  3. Lovely paintings. I’m so happy for you that you got the painting set you’ve always wanted. I’ve never heard of that set. I did some plein air painting yesterday, and my daughter spilled my watercolor pencils down a planter, and we could not get them back. Deep sigh. Still, we had fun. 🙂 I hope you have a lovely time in Latvia. I remember you went last year, too, didn’t you? Must be nice to be able to spend a lot of time with your family. Hugs, Brenda

    1. Thanks Brenda! You’re right, my daughter’s wedding was last year in August. I came this time because my mom thought she was getting very old (she’s just 84) and wanted to see me. Apart from the weather, everything else was nice.
I’m sorry to hear you lost your painting supplies, well, that’s replaceable, at least you had fun. Longing for home already, it’s been almost a month. It is nice, but it’s so difficult to try to paint sitting wherever happens. It was windy today, everything flying away.
So nice to exchange some word with you again!

    2. I was very dissatisfied with anything. My new followers were not updated, I didn’t receive e-mail notifications, just here and there and likes from the reader also did not show up under other bloggers articles. I contacted support, and I suppose it’s ok now. Who knows? Maybe since I changed location something was off. Nothing is perfect, but WordPress is still way better than any other blogging platform.

    3. I tried, I even have somewhere leftovers of my blogger blog and some other beginnings which I should delete, in fact, nothing worked better than WP because of clarity, ease of use and ability to interact with others.

    4. No problem, it didn’t. Lots of work. Two of these paintings have already found their owners. I have one commission yet, so I’m doing drawings for that. To offer more color and layout choices.

    5. People really like these simple drawings. Evita who got the sweet peas told she loved colors and lines. The Garden berries had attracted with color and shape of berries. So sure, it is nice. Thanks Brenda for the follow-up!

    1. Thanks David! These were liked a lot. 2 originals are already gone, I’m working on similar stuff, but when I get over the jet lag, I’m going to place links to Fine Art America on the art sales and design page so that prints and cards are available, as well!

  4. Your paintings are so delicate and quite lovely. I’m glad you are lavishing these new water colors on yourself. It is in the small generousities we gain great pleasures and joy. Did you know the Bible says “Every good and perfect gift comes down from above from the Father of lights.”?

    1. These sketches are probably delicate because of the objects I was drawing. It is possible to get the essence of the object on paper or canvas sometimes, but it can also happen the other way. Our tastes are different, so I should be fine with “quite lovely”, as well, even though, I assume they came out really good because I had no proper place to draw or paint, plus images and their colors on your screen will depend on the properties of your monitor, even size of it. I had not heard this particular saying, but I believe that we should return to the society what we have been given. That refers to anything: talents, abilities, financials, etc.

  5. I enjoy anything that helps make it through a rainy day. And your watercolors are beautiful.
