A little bit of nostalgic beauty: snow and winter paintings

Snow and winter paintings are a great way to start painting since we can interpret the landscape or view in many ways. We can apply warm or cool glow to the snow and winter paintings, we can use shadows, different colors for sky and use distance or abstract background. We can stick to a photo or do what I’m doing: implement some visual ideas from memory or just look through the window and paint what is there. Out of my studio window, there’s plenty: all kinds of trees, buildings and so forth, including spruce, firs, pine and there’s a big sky, too. Quite enough for my snow and winter paintings.

Ontario weather takes care of the rest. Here and there, snow will be deep and bright white, capping every single branch and putting a warming snow scarf on every surface. It will have shadows in clear weather and it will show the branch shapes which puncture the clouds and sky. Altogether: it’s almost a finished landscape view, choose whatever angle suits better. Therefore, and because many of snow and winter paintings take origin as demos, I didn’t need or use any photos. The interpretation of these views is somewhat abstract. I will let the art speak more this time. It only has so many chances.

The collection of snow and winter paintings has grown quite big over years. It’s also a good selling feature before holidays. To be honest, winter and snow paintings usually sell only around this time and very rarely during other seasons. It’s a brief moment, and I believe I don’t really need more of snow and winter paintings at the moment. Until Christmas, we love snow and white wonderland landscapes. When it gets to February and March, oh my! We are totally tired of grey and white with spots of green which is also not the lively spring green. That certainly depends on the area where one lives. Ontario winter can be long.

I hope you’d love to make my Christmas and maybe purchase some art. There’s way more than I can publish just in one post. Enjoy!

    1. Thank you very much Tania Marie! Well, I suppose it’s the biggest and picture came out nice. It’s purely holiday and Christmas painting because of all crystals and shine, and I hope somebody in Ontario could pick it up because it has the main value and use at this time.
You, too, have a great time which I know you will!

  1. I also loved the textured moonlit trees – very nice, as usual. These winter scenes make me want to put on a sweater. Hope you’re staying warm, Inese. Cheers.

    1. Thanks very much!
Oh, I’m warm. It must be the photos, but they don’t seem to be cold to me, well, maybe because I know how they look in reality. In fact, there’s quite a lot of warm glow in each one. The arrangement for the biggest piece certainly works. Taking into account the artistic expression and mastery, the big decorative painting is a very basic one, it’s the Christmassy elements which add to its look. Nevertheless, each one has taken a lot of work, and I have published them before. I never got any normal pictures of the big moonlit painting, so it’s its debut.
      I’m fine and warm.
Have a good week and stay warm, too, or you’re having rains there, I should say, stay dry and cozy!

  2. Beautiful paintings dear Inese. Here in Trivandrum, we are having sunny hot days. Seeing snow in your paintings cools my eyes and heart 😊💖💖💖

    1. Thank you very much! That’s so nice to hear! And we hear are apparently not in awe of snow as it appears.
Well, I think my presentation isn’t perfect, but I’m happy it soothes and cools your heart!

    2. Thank you very much! I was really upset that it seemed not right since I have to resize all images to just 30% of their actual size or I cannot upload them to the gallery. Your nice comment helps!

  3. The pictures are beautiful!
I’ve been really busy. Hopefully I can sit down one day soon and have a “chat” with you!
    Hugs and prayers, dear friend~🤗🙏

    1. Thanks very much Robbie! No problem, everybody is busy. I haven’t had time to even talk to my daughter in Europe recently. It’s absurd, but it’s been 3 years since I haven’t seen my daughter, grandsons who are adults now and sister’s family.
I completely get that when there’s no time for all things which would need to be done.
While I’m trying to publish something and this all takes so much time, like taking pictures when it’s really dark and then getting them look somewhat right. Wrists hurt, eyes hurt, and to be honest, all my publishing hasn’t resulted in anything yet. I will have to try something else apparently. This time almost every year has been a very difficult one, I’m usually glad when all holidays are over and it is what it is.
So, you are absolutely not alone when it comes to not having time to chat with anybody. All the best to you!

    2. So sorry you haven’t been able to talk to your daughter recently.
I’m sorry you are having a difficult time. I pray it will get better soon.
Holidays are always so back and forth, sometimes very happy others, not so much.
      Lots of prayers.🙏
      Hugs and blessings~🤗🎨🎄🎁

    3. Thanks Robbie!
I haven’t seen my daughter for 3 years. No need to feel sorry, everybody whose family lives across the ocean and many thousands of miles and restrictions away, knows that it’s nothing pleasant. Well, I just hope the pandemic will somewhen ease up and we will be able to travel without abnormal threats and fears. I also hope the pandemic doesn’t last so long that when I finally get to Europe I still recognize her on the street. LOL.
When you don’t have family around, as well as any friends, holidays make no sense. So, I rather they are over soon.
I hope your health is ok and you’re well.
      Have a good weekend!

    4. You’re welcome!
I know what you mean. We had planned to go to Canada so the grandbaby could spend Christmas with her Canadian family, but alas, this year and last we couldn’t go.
We’ve lost all our relatives except one that were living here when we moved here. We’d have almost 50 people at one or the other of the aunts’ houses. It was always so much fun, and oh, the stories they told. My family all misses those days.
I pray you are ok, too.
      Blessings~

    5. Yes, I know. It used to be fun, lots of it. For me, Canada has been kind of not that great since I’m not that young, do not go out anywhere and, therefore, I hardly know anybody. The only exception is some students, but I don’t feel good having anybody around right now. I think we will try to find some small tree maybe over the weekend, and that then will be Christmas.
      Wishing you all the best!

    1. Thank you very much Maria!
They are all from previous years. Like I’m saying, the winter paintings look great only in winter and around Christmas time.
Pine cones are from 2010 I believe, it was just hidden among numerous paintings. The big piece with crystals I update here and there so that it looks fine I cannot remember when exactly I started it, but it’s taken many layers, like very many. Well, they aren’t that blue in reality, but still, look good on pictures. It’s difficult to sell specific winter paintings, so, last year I didn’t paint any. I might do a new watercolor for students, but probably no more acrylic.
      All the best Maria!

    1. Thank you very much Shawn! Trees are always great to paint! They’re always around and in any color one prefers. It’s the best seasonally changing feature ever.
      Have a good afternoon!

    1. Thank you!
I used to paint snow quite a lot, mainly for the numerous classes, but I recently have had hardly any art classes, so, I don’t paint more snow on my own. The weather in Ontario can change swiftly, sun in the morning, snow at night. The 2 last days have felt like spring, above and around plus 10 degrees Celsius. I wouldn’t know the temperature in Fahrenheit degrees which is used in the USA.
Painted snow feels and looks nice, however, we are always glad when it’s the end of March and, hopefully no more snow covers the garden.
I wish all the best, as well as a nice week!

    2. I’m glad you visited my website and when I have some free moment I’m going to return to your site to check out the great articles! Thanks and have a good day!

    1. Thanks!
I was going to publish something new today, but got distracted. Our case counts are doubling every day, so, I need to book the booster appointment which will probably take a few days or a week until I get through due to high demand.
I hope you’re doing fine over there!

    2. Thanks very much Liv!
Certainly, we will have something nice, although small. The tree is nice, and paintings and plants add a lot of festivity to the place.
All the best to you and your loved ones for the upcoming Christmas and holidays!
